Left 4 Dead 2 server RAM: how much do you need?
Left 4 Dead 2 keeps one campaign map loaded and wipes state between rounds, so what it needs is flat and easy to predict.
Recommendation
You need a server with at least
3GB
- Engine / Base OS:
- 2 GB
- Player Overhead:
- +0.4 GB
- Estimated Raw Usage:
- 2.4 GB
- Suggested cores:
- 2
- Disk to allow:
- 20 GB+
Source engine, one campaign map at a time. State resets between rounds so nothing accumulates.

What uses the memory in Left 4 Dead 2
Nothing builds up. The Director spawns and removes things as it goes, the map loads once, and each round reset puts the server back where it started. That makes it one of the few games here where your day-one figure is still right months later.

Where people get it wrong
Paying for headroom you will never use. More memory does nothing for a stock server; stutter there comes from network latency or custom content loading. Put the budget into a server located near your players.
