Horde night is the peak — zombie pathfinding is what saturates the CPU, not normal play.

What uses the memory in 7 Days to Die

Its voxel terrain is destructible everywhere, so each dug hole and each placed block is a lasting change the server keeps track of. Layered on that slow growth, the Blood Moon drops a big horde of zombies into the world at once, each simulated individually, which makes horde night the true high-water mark.

Where people get it wrong

Sizing for the average. A server that coasts through six days can run out of memory on day seven and corrupt the save on its way down. Overhauls like Darkness Falls push up both the everyday level and the horde-night peak by a wide margin.

Rather not run the server yourself?

These tools are free and funded by the two hosting services we run. If you want a server that is already set up, here they are.
